Description

The Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (Director of DEI) will development strategies to enhance the recruitment, retention and academic success of ACHE students, particularly those from underrepresented groups.  Responsibilities will include research to identify and create new initiatives that demonstrate ACHE’s commitment to a welcoming, inclusive environment for its students, faculty and staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Development of strategies to enhance the recruitment, retention and academic success of students, particularly those from underrepresented groups.
  • In a team setting with administration and faculty develop innovative and longitudinal strategies for diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and anti-bias themes across the curriculum for all students.
  • Development of policies and monitoring of practices that engage in ongoing, systematic, and focused recruitment and retention activities, to achieve mission-appropriate diversity outcomes among students, faculty, senior administrative staff, and other relevant members of its academic community.
  • Collaborating with faculty and curriculum committees of all ACHE colleges to enhance educational experiences, curricular and extra-curricular, and Pathway Programs, that foster student learning across different communities and diverse populations.
  • Coordinating diversity planning across the university. This will include identifying and creating new initiatives that demonstrate ACHE’s commitment to a welcoming, inclusive environment for all of its students, faculty, and staff.
  • Encouraging research initiatives to address disparities/minority health issues.
  • Seeking external funding, as available to finance diversity initiatives.

Other General Responsibilities

  • Assist ACHE and its colleges in the implementation of their respective Mission Statements, Statement of Purpose, Institutional Plan, and Financial Plans
  • Assist with various functions of ACHE as required
  • Attend ACHE events when faculty and/or administrative participation is expected
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Vice President or his/her designee

 QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate level preparation (MA, MS, DO, MD, JD, PhD, or other degree) with three or more years of experience in developing and implementing diversity programs and leading diversity activities is preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in teaching and academic leadership in a health sciences and/or higher education setting
  • Educational, work and life experience from one or more areas of: human and civil rights, the effects of racism on physician and mental health, health equity, healthcare provisions, especially Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and marginalized communities
  • Excellent command of all aspects of diversity issues in health education, including faculty recruitment and retention
  • DEI competencies in the curriculum, assess the impact of diversity on education, evaluation of the campus climate, and the policy and legal dynamics of affirmative action and diversity in higher education
  • Successful track record of addressing diversity/inclusion goals in the context of a major health organization, institution of higher education or other complex organization
  • Proven experience in the clinical or education research, including publication

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five (5) or more years of management experience working at an institution of higher education
  • Three (3) to five (5) years in staff training and mentoring

  • Ability to cross numerous organizational boundaries and work with multiple constituencies.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise discretion
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computer skills, i.e., Microsoft Office.
  • Display professionalism for the college in all communication and interaction.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy.
  • Must possess superior written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Must be able to adapt to change quickly, efficiently, and positively, and successfully lead through periods of change within the institution.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize numerous and varied assignments.
  • High-energy, versatile, self-directed.

ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES ESSENTIAL TO THE FUNCTION OF THE JOB

Physical and Sensory Abilities

  • May be exposed to short, intermittent, and/or prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing in performance of job duties.
  • May be required to accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies to include, but not limited to pens, pencils, calculators, computer keyboards, telephone, etc.
  • May be required to transport oneself to other campus offices, conference rooms, and on occasion, to off-campus sites to attend meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars, etc.
  • May require significant travel or work away from campus.
  • Requires attendance at events representing ACHE both within as well as outside of the college setting.
  • Frequently required to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
  • Frequently required to see for purposes of reading matter.
  • Frequently required to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Occasionally required to lift items in a normal office environment.
  • Frequently required to operate office and presentation equipment.
